Syria-Jordan earthquake: Powerful tremors felt across the region

4.8-magnitude quake strikes near Hama, causing panic but no major damage

Residents in Jordan and Syria report feeling the tremors, with no immediate reports of casualties

AMMAN, Jordan - A 4.8-magnitude earthquake struck near the Syrian city of Hama late on Monday, according to the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ). The quake was felt across the region, including in Jordan, Lebanon, and Israel.

There were no immediate reports of casualties or major damage, but the tremors caused panic among residents. The earthquake struck at a depth of 10 kilometres (6.2 miles) near the town of Al-Suqaylabiyah, about 100 kilometres (62 miles) northeast of the Syrian capital, Damascus.

The GFZ said the earthquake was followed by several smaller aftershocks. The Syrian state news agency SANA reported that the quake caused some damage to buildings in Hama and the surrounding area, but there were no reports of injuries.

The earthquake comes just weeks after a devastating 7.8-magnitude earthquake struck Turkey and Syria, killing more than 45,000 people. The quake caused widespread destruction in both countries, and hundreds of thousands of people have been left homeless.
